When Back Pain Becomes More Than Just Back Pain

In most cases, the onset of sciatica starts without you really being aware of it.

Maybe one day, your back felt a little achy or sore.

You brush it off, thinking you had just slept funny, or maybe it’s just a normal sign of ageing.
So, you take Paracetamol and go on with your day.

But it’s the same thing the next day, the next week, and the next month. Soon, what started as an annoyance or discomfort has progressed into debilitating pain that’s preventing you from living your life:

  • Playing with your kids or grandkids
  • Getting a good night’s sleep
  • Performing your job functions at work
  • Engaging in healthy exercise or sports
  • Travelling and going on Holiday
  • Enjoying your hobbies and passions
You notice you’re going through more packets of painkillers than usual, and you begin to think:
“Will this be my life forever now?”
But instead of going away, the pain only gets worse, spreading to your legs and causing tingling and numbness.

At this point, your back pain may no longer be just back pain. It may be the condition known as sciatica.

Conditions

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is the medical term for pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.
The sciatic nerve is your body’s longest nerve, travelling from your pelvis all the way down both of your legs to your feet.
Hence, why sciatica symptoms often appear as:
increased pain
Increased pain when sneezing or coughing
weakness muschle
Weakness of muscles of the leg
tingling legs
Tingling sensations along the side of one leg
radiating pains
Radiating pains from the lower back down to the foot
walking pain
Pain when walking or moving
Intense leg
Intense leg cramps on both or either side
lower backs
Numbness in the legs, hips, or lower back
However, there have been some cases where sciatica pain can become so severe, patients can feel it radiate up to their neck or shoulders.
Unfortunately, because of the potential for a wide array of overlapping conditions, sciatica isn’t always easily identifiable to the individual or correctly diagnosed by a GP.

Leading to people seeking their own ways of relief.

What We Treat

Get Lasting Sciatica Relief And Sciatica Pain Treatment. Reduce Numbness, Tingling Or Nerve Pain To Reclaim Your Lifestyle & Mobility

sciatica img
Sciatica can be caused by a number of different factors.
The most common cause of sciatica is a slipped disc, but there are other, potentially more hazardous reasons for the pain, so it’s crucial to get it assessed by a professional.
  • Other possible causes include:
  • Tight Muscles
  • Spinal Mass
  • Wear and Tear
  • Lifestyle Factors
  • Spinal Misalignment
  • Inflammatory Conditions

Trying to treat the condition yourself through various methods, such as pain relief patches, painkillers, heat and/or ice, or stretching, may actually cause the condition to become worse.

Leading to a new set of problems:
Repeated Physical Stress which can increase the risk of further damage.
Repeated Mental Stress from our thoughts which can lower our immune system.
Repeated Chemical Stress from medications can wreak havoc on our bodies.

So, what does that leave us as far as treatment options for sciatica?

SHOULDER PAIN FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Sciatica In Poole

If you are dealing with sciatic pain, lower back pain, leg pain, tingling or symptoms that keep coming back, these FAQs answer the common questions people ask before booking an appointment for sciatica in Poole.

What does sciatica feel like?

Sciatica often feels like pain, tingling, burning, numbness or electric-like discomfort travelling from the lower back or buttock into the leg.

For some people, it stays around the hip or buttock. For others, it can travel down the thigh, calf or even into the foot.

You may notice it more when sitting, bending, driving, standing up, walking or getting comfortable in bed.

At Life Balance Chiropractic in Poole, we assess how your lower back, pelvis, hips, muscles and nervous system are working together, so we can understand what may be irritating the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica usually happens when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed somewhere along its pathway.

This can be linked to things like:

  • lower back joint restriction
  • disc irritation
  • muscle tension
  • pelvis or hip mechanics
  • poor sitting posture
  • previous injuries
  • stress and nervous system sensitivity

Sometimes the pain starts suddenly. Other times, it builds slowly until one small movement sets it off.

An assessment can help you understand what may be causing your sciatic pain, rather than guessing or relying only on short-term relief.

Yes, sciatica can sometimes cause pain that travels into the hip, buttock, thigh, knee, calf or foot.

That is because the sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the pelvis and down the leg. When the nerve is irritated, symptoms can show up anywhere along that pathway.

Some people feel sharp pain. Others feel tingling, numbness, heaviness or weakness.

If symptoms are getting worse or you are losing strength in your leg or foot, it is important to get checked.

Sciatica can settle on its own for some people, especially if the irritation is mild and the body has time to recover.

But if the pain keeps coming back, lasts for weeks, spreads further down the leg, or affects walking, sleep or work, it may need a proper assessment.

The important question is not just “will it go away?” but “why did it happen in the first place?”

At Life Balance Chiropractic, we help people understand what may be contributing to their sciatica so they can make a clearer decision about their next step.

Sciatica exercises can help some people, but the right exercises depend on what is irritating the nerve.

Gentle movement may help if your body feels stiff or guarded. But forcing stretches, copying random exercises online, or pushing through nerve pain can sometimes make symptoms worse.

A helpful exercise should usually feel manageable, not aggressive.

If sciatica keeps returning or travelling down your leg, an assessment can help you understand what movement is right for your body.

You should be careful with any stretch that increases pain, tingling, numbness or symptoms travelling further down the leg.

With sciatica, more stretching is not always better. Sometimes the nerve is already irritated, and pulling harder can make it more sensitive.

Be especially careful if:

  • pain shoots further down the leg
  • symptoms worsen after stretching
  • numbness or weakness increases
  • the stretch feels sharp or electric

If this happens, stop and get advice before continuing.

The best sleeping position for sciatica is usually the one that reduces pressure and helps your body feel supported.

Some people feel better lying on their side with a pillow between the knees. Others prefer lying on their back with support under the knees.

There is no perfect position for everyone.

If sciatica is waking you at night or making it hard to get comfortable, it may be a sign the nerve is still irritated and needs proper assessment.

You may want to book an assessment if sciatic pain is affecting your sleep, walking, sitting, driving, work or daily movement.

It is also worth getting checked if symptoms:

  • keep coming back
  • travel down the leg
  • cause tingling or numbness
  • affect your confidence moving
  • do not settle after rest or gentle movement

You do not need to wait until it becomes unbearable.

At Life Balance Chiropractic in Poole, we help you understand what may be causing the nerve irritation and what your next steps could be.

Your first appointment is designed to understand your sciatica properly.

We will talk through your symptoms, when they started, where the pain travels, what makes it better or worse, your health history, lifestyle and goals.

We may also assess how your spine, pelvis, hips, muscles and nervous system are functioning.

You do not need to know exactly what is wrong before you come in. That is what the assessment is for.

Life Balance Chiropractic provides sciatica treatment in Poole for people dealing with lower back pain, buttock pain, leg pain, tingling, numbness or recurring sciatic symptoms.

We start with a detailed consultation and assessment to understand what may be irritating the sciatic nerve.

If chiropractic care is suitable, we will explain your options and create a personalised plan around your needs.

If sciatica is affecting your sleep, work, walking or daily life, booking an assessment can help you take the next step.

Since having my daughter, my hips had never felt quite right. I’d also developed a sharp pain around my left shoulder blade and a stiff neck, which was probably not helped by constantly carrying and picking up my very clingy toddler! It had started to affect more than I realised. Housework was uncomfortable, looking after the children felt harder, and being in pain was beginning to affect my mood. I’d even started avoiding certain everyday movements because I was worried I might hurt myself. Someone recommended Life Balance Chiropractic and spoke so highly of the team that I decided to give them a try. I travel from West Parley for my appointments, and it has genuinely been worth the journey. From the beginning, I was really impressed by the new client process. I felt properly listened to, rather than rushed through an appointment, and everything felt personal, smooth and thorough. Seeing my X-rays was particularly helpful because it gave me a much clearer understanding of what was going on. The findings were explained in a way that made sense, and I could finally see why certain things might have been contributing to the way I felt. I started noticing a difference after my first two sessions. Before coming to Life Balance, I would wake up several times during the night in pain and assume I must have slept awkwardly. Recently, I slept through the entire night for the first time in ages. That might sound like a small thing, but when you have young children, waking up with more energy and less pain makes a huge difference. I’m no longer in pain while looking after the house and the children, and picking up my toddler feels so much easier. Harrison is an amazing and incredibly precise chiropractor. Chris has also been brilliant, particularly when working on my hips. He is extremely thorough and pays attention to how my whole body is responding, including muscles and areas I would never have thought were connected. There have been areas that felt incredibly tense before an adjustment and noticeably more relaxed afterwards. I’ve really appreciated that they don’t just focus on the one place that hurts. They look at the bigger picture. The biggest change is that I feel much more confident in my body again. I’m no longer avoiding normal, everyday things because I’m frightened I’ll hurt myself. Being in less pain and sleeping better has made family life feel much easier and more manageable. Everyone at Life Balance is warm, welcoming and genuinely personal. The team always greets me by name, and you never feel like you’re simply the next appointment in the diary. You feel properly cared for. I would absolutely recommend Life Balance Chiropractic in Poole, especially to other mums who haven’t felt quite right since giving birth. For me, making the journey is a complete no-brainer.

I have seen an amazing difference in just a few weeks, I have struggled from a young age with my joints. My jaw was cracking every time I ate and was getting painful, with the help of Chiro I can now eat without pain and very few cracks. I am able to go on long walks without my knees and hips hurting or cracking. Hope is very lovely and will answer all my questions and reassure me of any concerns I have.

I attended life balance for a free spinal health check up, as I was suffering with back and neck pain on a daily basis, mainly due to my job but past trauma to my neck has contributed over the years. I had a thorough assessment, X-ray’s and a past history account and had a future plan put in place. I started by having two sessions a week for the first two months and had seen a noticeable difference within a few weeks, hardly any headaches, no migraines , barely any pain at the end of a busy working week and also my posture is a lot better then before. I am now having treatment once a week and then spreading out to every couple of weeks in the near future. I was very anxious to start off with due to the sensitivity/pain in my neck area but with reassurance and patience from my chiropractor Chris, I feel I have made massive improvements, not just in my work life but in my home life and also with my energy levels too. Life balance is a calm and friendly place to attend and I would highly recommend them to anyone I know suffering with body pain/problems. So pleased with my progress.
