The Truth About Pelvic Girdle Pain Pregnancy

While bringing new life into the world can be one of the most fulfilling and beautiful experiences a woman can have, the unfortunate reality is pregnancy doesn’t come without its discomforts.

Throughout pregnancy, your body continues to adapt to your growing child.
This causes the lower back, pelvis, and hips to shift, which causes discomfort in 50-70% of women.

For some, it can be an easily tolerable experience, but for the majority of women, the discomfort crosses the line into pain.

Now, it becomes nearly impossible to:
  • Sleep through the night without interruption
  • Be present with your friends and family
  • Retain your freedom of mobility and independence

This added strain, on top of an already stressful experience for your body, can quickly result in a potentially dangerous situation for both you and your baby.

While some women may think that this is just what pregnancy feels like, the truth is there are steps you can take to alleviate the discomfort while protecting the health of your unborn child.

Why the Common Options for Pelvic Girdle Pain and SPD Are not the Solution

When someone experiences skeletal, muscular, or nervous system-related pain, the first course of action is to try:
Icons
Pain relief patches
Icons
Stretching or gentle exercise
Icons
OTC painkillers
Icons
Manual massage
Icons
Using heat and/or ice
lower backs
Pelvic Belts
But the problem with pregnancy is that you’re not just making decisions for yourself.
You have to consider the safety of your child, too.
Repeated Physical Stress can increase the risk of further damage to your body and potentially, and make it more difficult to carry.
Repeated Mental Stress from our thoughts can lower our immune system, making it harder to support your unborn child’s development.
Repeated Chemical Stress from our medications can cause dangerous inflammation and can be toxic to your child, even after birth if you continue to breastfeed.
All that adds up to mothers feeling “stuck.”
So what is the safest and most effective way to alleviate the pain and discomfort without jeopardising the health of your baby?
We have the answer.

Why Does Pregnancy Cause So Much Discomfort if It’s Natural?

During pregnancy, your body creates a hormone called relaxin. This hormone relaxes ligaments and joints to prepare you for birth.
However, it can also lower your centre of gravity, compromising your spinal health and leading to spinal nerve stress
Hormones:
There are multiple reasons you may be experiencing pain or discomfort during and post-pregnancy
The 3 main causes typically associated with pregnancy pain are hormones, previous pregnancies, and pre-existing weakness or injury.
Previous Pregnancies:
Each subsequent pregnancy stretches the pelvic muscles and ligaments. Therefore, women who have had several pregnancies are more prone to pelvic misalignments.
Untreated, this can lead to increasing pain or discomfort long after giving birth, which can severely reduce your ability to stay fit and active.
Preexisting Weakness Or Injury:
Any part of the spine that has been previously traumatised, either from a previous injury or even poor posture, can impair the health of a pregnant mother.
Add on the stress and strain of the weight from the baby, and suddenly, what was once a minor ache becomes an unbearable pain.

Fortunately, Life Balance Chiropractic is versed in treating all forms of pregnancy-related pains, and we will work with you to develop a custom plan that is as unique as you are.

That’s why we recommend practitioners by the pelvic partnership.

Keeping You Both Safe During Pregnancy & Beyond

At Life Balance Chiropractic, we are able to safely support you and help alleviate the pain and potential complications before, during, and after you give birth.

Pregnancy:
A recent study found that 75% of women report feeling a reduction of pain during pregnancy with a chiropractic plan.

During pregnancy, a healthy spine is vital for supporting the growth of your child.

Additionally, a misaligned pelvis might reduce the space available for your developing baby’s intrauterine constraint. This constraint can lead to several potential outcomes and conditions, such as:

  • Torticollis: The neck muscles shorten on one side, causing the baby’s head to tilt to one side.
  • Clubfoot: whereby intrauterine constraint can lead to the feet being twisted inward or down.
  • Plagiocephaly occurs when the baby’s head shape on one side flattens, creating cranial strain due to the consistent pressure on that part of the skull during development.
  • Developmental Dysplasia of the hips: the hip joint is not fully formed and can cause the hips to dislocate.
  • Intrauterine growth restriction: Whereby the baby isn’t growing as expected due to restricted space.
  • Breech presentation: can prevent the baby from turning its head down and so present feet or bum first, which many hospitals now as a standard practice recommend c-section when it may be avoided with earlier diagnosis and care intervention.
Delivery:
A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to assume the right position for birth.

In some instances, this may hinder your ability to deliver naturally without surgical intervention, leading to a lengthier and more complex delivery.

Post-delivery:
The truth is that the human body doesn’t always snap back into place so easily after delivery.

And when not addressed properly, the changes in your body can amplify with age, and any additional pregnancies you may have could be increasingly dangerous.

We are here to support you as you regain your pre-pregnancy body and stay fit and active for many years to come, helping you care for your child long into the future.
While it may seem overwhelming, we are not expecting you to know everything.
But if you bring all your concerns to us, we will work with you to help determine what is best for you and your baby and create a custom solution designed specifically for you both.
Providing the best possible care for you so you can provide the best possible care for your baby.
